OK, that's just from the wheels not being smooth enough. Try using something like 12" bike wheels instead of pulleys...I've got a setup with 20" BMX rims and that's smooth as *insert word here, unlike british*

yo i use the rode VMP, it's great! Excellent quality and directionality and it's only about as long as your hand...tops. Very compact for a quality shotgun mic.
